Selected writers read from work in progress or from recently published books. Readings are short, unhurried and in Portuguese, sometimes alongside English translation.
The Sarau
The word sarau describes a gathering in a home where literature and music are shared aloud. Casa do Sarau keeps that shape and brings it to London: five movements, one room, no spectacle.

02 · The Voice
Performance and music
A musician, an essayist, a spoken-word artist. Whatever the form, it is live and close: no stage lighting, no barrier between performer and room.
03 · The Encounter
The open microphone
Anyone in the room can read for five minutes: their own writing, or a page by a writer they love. This is where the evening most often surprises us.
04 · The Book
Livraria do Sarau
A small table of books by that evening's writers and by Lusophone publishers. Authors sign, readers ask questions, and titles are passed hand to hand.
05 · The Table
After the reading
The evening does not end when the last piece is read. Food and drinks are served before and after the readings — the bar is closed during the programme — and the conversations that follow are the real reason many people return.
House manners
How the room works.
- Arrive a little early; the room fills quietly.
- Readings start on time, and we amplify no more than the room needs.
- Phones stay away during the readings. Photograph the room, not the reader.
- Portuguese is the language of the house; English is always welcome in the conversation.
- Applause at the end of a set, not between poems.
